Support for the Oculus Rift was initially announced on August 27, 2012 on the Oculus VR blog [1] for the 12.12.12, coinciding with the release of the open beta, but it wasn't available at this date.

A demo of the game with Oculus Rift support was shown at GDC 2013 and reviewed in an article at Road To VR [2] on March 25, 2013. On April 27, 2013 Cymatic Bruce posted a video [3] of Hawken gameplay on the Oculus Rift using some specific configuration settings, confirming initial support for the Oculus Rift albeit with a lot of issues.

In July 2013 Road To VR reached out to Oculus [4] about the state of the project. They responded that the tragic passing of Andrew Reisse who led the Rift integration for Hawken set them back, that both sides were still working on it but that it was taking longer than expected.

After some months without updates, it was announced on July 18, 2013 on the game website [5] that a new update was coming with basic Oculus Rift support. Later in August 14, 2013 Jason Hugues (producer of Hawken) confirmed in an IGN video interview [6] that the next update coming at the end of August would have Oculus Rift support.

On September 2, 2013 it was announced on the Hawken forums [7] that the Hawken: Ascension patch would be available in September 5, 2013, with no mention of Oculus Rift support in the release notes. Jason Hughes said in a following message that Rift support was indeed available in the patch and that it was considered to be in an Alpha state. On September 4, 2013 it was announced [8] that due to unforeseen issues they had to delay the release until September 10, 2013. The patch became available in September 11 [9], 2013 and eventually included Oculus Rift support [10], although not out of the box [11].

Meteor Entertainment (publisher) closed its Seattle office in March 2014 [12] and the rights to the game have been acquired by Reloaded Games in March 2015 [13].
